Beware Cleanup And Repair Scams After Major Storm Monday

As Iowans clean up the debris and damage left in the wake of Monday’s storm, Attorney General, Tom Miller, warns them to beware of scammers looking to take advantage of the situation. “Contractors we call ‘storm chasers’ head to these areas to persuade storm victims to hire them on the spot for cleanup and repair work,” Miller says. “Homeowners must be prepared for these contractors’ pitches and promises.” Miller says if at all possible, work with local businesses and be wary of contractors who show up at the door offering to help. Interview your potential contractor, ask for references and research their ratings online or with the Better Business Bureau before signing a contract. Get multiple estimates, choose the best one and get the contract in writing. Make sure you understand your insurance and what will and will not be covered and make sure your contractor has insurance as well. Miller adds that you should read and understand your contract fully before signing and know your right to cancel services. Homeowners are better off relying on local bank or credit union financing rather than anything offered by a contractor and should avoid paying large up-front sums. Finally, the license plate numbers and vehicle descriptions of workers should be noted and retained for your records. Take a picture of these if at all possible.
