Youth Turkey Season Opens Next Week

An estimated average of 5,500 Iowa youth, 15 and under, have participated in Iowa’s youth turkey hunting season each year for the past four years. This season opens Friday, April 5 for those who purchased a turkey license prior to their 15th birthday. The focus of the season is to provide opportunities to teach the skills necessary to become a confident turkey hunter. Ideally, the experience will begin prior to opening day as potential participants scout the areas they plan to hunt, identify roosting trees and fields where birds are gathering, secure permission to hunt on private land and become accustomed to the limits of the gun and shot. It is also a good idea to get a jump start on practicing calls. An unfilled youth tag is valid until filled during the remainder of the spring turkey season, which ends on May 12. Youth season ends on April 7. Mentors hunting with youth must have a valid turkey hunting license for one of the spring turkey seasons and may not carry a bow or firearm while acting as a mentor.
