Volunteers Plant Trees Along Sauk Rail Trail In Honor Of Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day today (Monday), new trees have been planted along the Sauk Rail Trail in Carroll County. Members of the Sauk Rail Trail Association, with the help of some volunteers, planted 125 sugar maple saplings on the south side of the path to the east of Maple River over the course of about five hours on Saturday afternoon. The young trees were purchased at a steep discount from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) State Forest Nursery. Association President, Dr. Frank Greteman, says this is part of an ongoing effort to plant at least 150 trees every year along the trail. An additional 20 trees are expected to be planted later this week.
