Thrown Away Silverware The Cause Of Meal Price Increases For CCSD Students Next Year

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education has accepted a proposal for a slight increase to meal prices for next school year. According to Director of Business Affairs, Gary Bengtson, the district had a history of modestly upping the price until Fiscal Year (FY) 2017-18, which saw no increase. He said Sara Anderson, the district’s food service director, is again suggesting another modest increase, but it is not due to rising food costs.

By Anderson’s estimate, nearly 6,000 pieces of silverware have been tossed into the trash bin by students since August. Bengston notes this is a problem nearly every year, but usually not one so large. To offset the cost of purchasing new cutlery, breakfast and lunch prices for students and faculty will be raised.

Board President, Jen Munson, agreed the higher meal prices would help reduce the financial impact of large volumes of silverware being thrown away, but she noted it does not address the root of the problem. Bengtson said they have started looking into some solutions.

The board unanimously approved the meal price increase. Breakfast will go up a nickel for elementary and middle school students to $1.60 and to $1.65 for high school students. Lunch prices will rise by 10 cents to $2.50 for kindergarten through fourth grade, $2.60 for fifth- through eighth-grade and $2.70 for high schoolers. The new pricing goes into effect at the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
