After a recent weather emergency training exercise for county hospitals and nursing homes, local first responders and Carroll County Emergency Management will be undertaking another training event on Tuesday, June 4. Carroll Police Chief, Brad Burke, says they will create an active shooter emergency at the Carroll High School.
He says the officers have no idea what is coming at them, so they will have to rely on their training in response. For safety reasons, the officers will not be doing a lot of emergency driving, but you may see a flurry of activity, especially at the school.
The police and sheriff’s department and Emergency Management have an ALICE training team, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. Burke says it is this group that designs the training exercise.
The last active shooter training took place at Kuemper in 2015, so Burke says it is time to go through the exercise again. Staff will be in attendance at the building and there will also be between 20 and 30 volunteer students participating. Some Des Moines Area Community College employees will also be on hand to observe. Following the training, they will sit down and discuss their thoughts on what worked and what did not as the scenario played out.
It is not just the officers that make a difference, Burke says, this training is also a way for the staff and students to learn how to react if such a situation should ever occur.
