South Central Calhoun Has Many Facilities Projects, And Another Aimed At Helping With Student Stress

As school gets underway this week for students at South Central Calhoun Community Schools a proposal from last year will be implemented for the first time. Superintendent, Jeff Kruse, says it will provide additional support to some of their students.

Kruse says districts across the state and country are seeing more and more students with mental issues, and this was a situation they felt they could no longer ignore. This new program is a way to be proactive in providing a service that is somewhat limited in rural Iowa. In addition to changing around of interior spaces to accommodate this initiative and a new office area at the elementary school in Rockwell City, other construction projects also related to their Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) are underway at the high school in Lake City.

Staff returned to work on Tuesday and this includes five new instructors and a new school nurse for the 2019/20 year. And as the halls begin to fill with activity again after the summer break, Kruse says, even after 10 years of service as the superintendent, he is really looking forward to another year of maintaining the strong traditions at South Central Calhoun.

Like all other districts in the area, South Central Calhoun will start the year with a full day of classes on Friday, Aug. 23. A link to the school’s website for more information and important dates can be found below.
