SMCH Welcomes Local Surgeon To Their Medical Team

A local surgeon has become a member of the staff at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) in Lake City. Dr. Ronald Cheney with Midwest Iowa Surgical Services will provide general surgery services, including laparoscopic, gynecological, tissue and breast, colon cancer, gall bladder and hernia repair. Stewart Memorial CEO, Cindy Carstens, says they are excited to have Dr. Cheney joining their team. “The addition of a general surgeon to our medical team and organization allows the individuals in our communities to receive surgical care locally and coordinate that care with their local primary provider,” she says. Although Dr. Cheney was born in Nebraska, he is the son of missionaries and grew up in Africa. He is passionate about continuing to serve in that missionary capacity, both in our region and out of the country. Cheney will be taking a six month sabbatical to continue mission work in Africa, at which time Stewart Memorial will continue to provide general surgery services. “Dr. Cheney’s passion to serve others is not only seen in his mission work,” Carstens says, “it is seen every day in the quality care and exceptional experiences he provides his patients.” Cheney says, “I’m very appreciative of SMCH and Loring Hospital (Sac City) for giving me the opportunity to serve their communities. I enjoy taking care of people in the rural health setting.” Dr. Cheney will provide services in Lake City on Mondays and Fridays and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Loring Hospital in Sac City.
