SCC Board Of Education Moves Forward With $4.8 Million Construction Project At Rockwell City Elementary

The South Central Calhoun Community School District (SCC) is moving forward with a $4.8 million construction project at the Rockwell City Elementary School. Following an extended discussion on the issue during the March 11 meeting, the board voted 6-1 to approve a bid from Humboldt-based Sande Construction Company. Superintendent, Jeff Kruse, says the planned work will impact many areas of the school.

A large portion of the project will be funded using some of the $6 million generated from the voter-approved Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL), which passed in April last year. The classroom additions will be paid for using the Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) fund, more commonly known as the one-cent sales tax. According to Kruse, the district has been planning these updates for several years and they are long overdue.

The project was originally estimated to cost about $4.5 million. With the bid coming in almost $300,000 higher than that, the board opted to form a cost-saving committee. Kruse says their goal is to identify areas where the district can make cuts.

Construction is scheduled to begin later this spring, with completion estimated sometime before the start of the 2020-21 school year.
