Sac City Officials Continue To Seek Funding Sources For 2020 Sewer Improvement Project

Officials in Sac City are working to pursue funding sources for a proposed $2.5 million sewer improvement project for the community’s aging infrastructure. After receiving no comment from the public during a hearing on Tuesday, March 26, the city council passed a resolution to approve the application for a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Administrator, Jamie Lawrence, says the he is optimistic they will be awarded the grant.

The majority of Sac City’s sewers were installed almost 65 year ago and at least a portion of them have been in operation for more than 70 years. Lawrence says their sewers are long overdue for updates, which is not an uncommon problem across the state.

Lawrence expects the grant application to be submitted next week and a response sometime in the next one to two months. Officials are also working to secure some funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program offers grants and low-interest loans for up to 75 percent of the project’s cost, but Lawrence says that high of an amount is unlikely.

If approved for both programs, up to 95 percent could be financed through outside sources. Current estimates have the sewer updates beginning next year.
