Recent Rains Could Be Blessing For Duck Hunters This Season

Most Iowans are pretty tired of what seems like consistent rainfall, but the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reporting it could be a boon for duck hunters. The September rains improved habitat conditions across most of the state, creating a number of shallow water areas where food is available. According to Orrin Jones, the DNR’s state waterfowl biologist, this a big change from early teal season and an active weather pattern to the north sent a large migration push into Iowa recently. This has created a nice mix of early and midseason ducks. “We’re hearing about large numbers of ducks at Red Rock and at Riverton, as well as other areas,” Jones says. “And while that’s good news, the bulk of the migration and hunting activities has yet to occur.” Duck season is now open in the north zone through Dec. 3 and through Dec. 10 in the south zone. It will open in the Missouri River zone on Oct. 26 and run through Dec. 17. A weekly duck migration report can be found by following the link included below.
