Carroll County prosecutors have filed formal charges against two Carroll residents accused of attempted check fraud. According to district court records, 36-year-old Ryan Cook and 31-year-old Kayla Bonilla each face one count of second-degree theft, a class D felony, and one count of third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor. The charges stem from an incident on May 22, in which Cook and Bonilla deposited a $1,500 check into the Availa Bank ATM with knowledge that the check would not be paid when presented and used the money to make purchases later at a Carroll business. Their arraignment hearing is scheduled for July 25 at the Carroll County Courthouse. If found guilty of the charges, Cook and Bonilla face a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and nearly $14,000 in fines.
