Perfect Weather For A Little Ice Fishing This Weekend

Once the Polar Vortex moves out of our area, many people may be looking for a way to get out into the relatively balmy temperatures predicted for this weekend. Anglers will be happy to learn that Ada Hayden Heritage Park in Ames will be hosting a family-friendly trout fishing event beginning at noon on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is stocking the lake in two places along the north shore with 2,200 rainbow trout. Those fishing are asked to avoid the stocking areas, but rather to bring their own ice fishing and safety gear out to other parts of the lake to cast a line. A limited number of fishing poles will be available to youth participants. Hot dogs and hot chocolate will be available for a free-will donation, with all proceeds being used to continue fishing improvements at local lakes. All adult anglers must have a valid fishing license and pay the trout fee. The daily limit is five trout per person and a possession limit of 10. Children ages 15 and under can fish for trout with a properly licensed adult, but must limit their catch to one per day. Children are also able to pay the trout fee and then they are allowed to catch their own limit of five.
