Pedestrian Transported For Treatment Wednesday After Being Struck By Vehicle In Carroll Walmart Parking Lot

A pedestrian was transported for treatment Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a motor vehicle in the Carroll Walmart parking lot. The Carroll Police Department responded to the scene of the accident at approximately 12:21 p.m. Upon arrival, an officer located the victim, 67-year-old Cynthia Schumacher, laying on the ground in front of a 2010 Toyota RAV4, driven by 68-year-old Marsha Carol Olerich of Manning, which was parked near the crosswalk with substantial damage to the front end. Schumacher was taken to St. Anthony Regional Hospital by Carroll County Emergency Medical Services for treatment of injuries. Olerich initially told the officer she believed her gas pedal had gotten stuck and she was unable to stop. Authorities later reviewed video surveillance of the accident and say she appeared to mix up the gas and brake pedals. According to law enforcement, she was picking up her son near the entrance and quickly accelerated into a trash can and cement barrier as the vehicle hit Schumacher. Damage to the Olerich vehicle is estimated at $8,000.
