Newly Released Numbers Show Loss Of Population In 69 Of Iowa’s 99 Counties, Including Six Of Seven In Our Listening Area

The Iowa State Data Center released preliminary estimated census numbers for 2018 on Thursday, reporting a decline of population in 69 of the 99 counties since 2010. This includes losses in six of the seven counties in the immediate listening area. Audubon saw the largest percentage decline at 10 percent. Sac County dropped over six percent of their population while Calhoun County lost 4.7 percent over that eight-year period. Smaller losses were reported in Greene, Carroll and Guthrie Counties, at 3.8, 3.2 and 2.1 percent respectively. The only county reflecting a rise in population during that time is Crawford at just shy of a half a percent. The estimates reflect overall population growth in Iowa, gaining around 110,000 new residents. Those migrating in, however, are likely to have selected counties containing larger metropolitan areas, like Dallas County, that was named the eighth-fastest growing in the nation at a 36 percent increase in population since the last census.
