A Harlan man was killed in a motorcycle accident Thursday evening. The Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene at the intersection of Highway 44 and 9th Street in Harlan at approximately 6:19 p.m. A 2013 Ford Explorer, driven by 24-year-old Riley Jean Kay of Harlan, was stopped at the southbound stop sign on 9th Street and did not see a 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the left lane of Highway 44. Kay pulled out to turn east and into the path of 55-year-old Scott Alan Peterson. Peterson was thrown from the motorcycle, sustaining fatal injuries. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Harlan Police, Fire and Rescue Departments and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
