MidAmerican Energy Sees Uptick In Scam Attempts Reported By Customers

Over the course of the past week, MidAmerican Energy Company customers have reported more instances of threatening calls from scammers posing as company employees. The callers claim that the victim’s bills are past due and demand immediate payment. They may threaten to shut off power unless a payment is made immediately over the phone with a prepaid debit card. The calls may appear more legitimate as the scammers can spoof the MidAmerican phone number to appear on the ID display. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and notify MidAmerican Energy through the number on your monthly billing statement. You can also call 888-427-5632. If you feel threatened by the caller, report it to local law enforcement. DO NOT call the number that appears on your caller ID, even if it looks like it may be legitimate. Billing status can be checked through your online account or by calling MidAmerican directly. “We provide several notifications to customers who are behind on payments,” says Mike Gehringer, vice president of customer operations. “Utility disconnection is a last resort, not a first step in the process. Protecting customers from scams is a top priority for us,” he adds.” More information can also be found by following the link included here.
