March 25 Through March 29 Is Severe Weather Awareness Week In Iowa

With spring officially here, it is time to prepare for what the rise in temperatures can mean across the state. March 25 through March 29 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa. The National Weather Service promotes preparedness and safety during the week, providing some tips and drills to help meet those goals. With an estimated 1,030 tornadoes reported in the United States in the last year alone, they urge everyone to keep an eye on the sky and on your local forecast. Everyone needs to take the time to be aware of all weather-related watches, warnings and advisories in their area and to have a plan already in place for what you and your family will do before severe weather hits. One of the ways you can do this is to participate in the state-wide tornado drill on Wednesday, March 27 at 10 a.m. Remaining connected to information and the ability to contact others is important as well. U.S. Cellular offers several tips to help track turbulent weather. Make sure you are able to keep you device charged. They recommend carrying a car charger or portable battery pack in the event power is lost during a storm. Download and use weather apps, texting may be more reliable during an event, so text to stay in touch, access social media to get first-hand accounts of what is happening and, most importantly, prepare.
