Man Gets Assistance From Storm Lake Authorities With Suicidal Friend In Mexico, Then Gets Arrested On A Theft Charge

After soliciting assistance from authorities with a suicidal friend in Mexico, a Storm Lake man wound up in jail on a theft charge. The Storm Lake Police Department reported they were contacted by 24-year-old Juan Andres Alvarez at approximately 1:40 a.m. Wednesday morning and he told them he was on FaceTime with a girlfriend in Mexico and she had severely cut her arms in a suicide attempt. Police arrived and monitored the call while securing an address. A police and community service officer located a hospital in the jurisdiction and remained connected until paramedics arrived, provided treatment and transported the victim. However, authorities learned Alvarez was wanted on an outstanding warrant for an alleged vehicle theft on April 14 in Storm Lake. The 2013 Subaru, valued at $17,200, was later recovered by Texas State Police in south Texas. Alvarez was arrested without incident and charged with first-degree theft, a class C felony, and held in the Buena Vista County jail on a $10,000 bond.
