Low-Income Heating Assistance Applications Are Being Accepted

Applications are now being accepted for Iowa’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, referred to as LIHEAP. The federally-funded program assists low-income families with paying their heating bills. “We encourage customers to take advantage of LIHEAP assistance,” says Mike Gehringer, vice president of customer operations for MidAmerican Energy. “Any customer who is having financial challenges should contact us to discuss our budget billing program and other payment options.” Contact information for MidAmerican can be found below. To be eligible for LIHEAP in Iowa, total household income must be at or below 175 percent of 2019 federal poverty guidelines. For example, a single-person household will be eligible with a gross income at or below $21,858. A family of four will be eligible with a gross income at or below $45,063. Applications can be made at your local community action agency. Customers may also help out those in need by making a donation to MidAmerican Energy’s I CARE program. The tax-deductible funds will receive a 25 percent match from MidAmerican and be distributed by that local community action agency to help offset the costs for heating and home weatherization. A donation to I CARE can be made by checking a box on the monthly bill or making a pledge online.
