Local Legislators Oppose Senate Bill That Would Allow Heavy Loads On County Bridges

Both local state legislators, 12th District House Representative, Brian Best, and 6th District Senator, Mark Segebart, indicated they will oppose Senate File 184, a bill that would allow vehicles with loads up to 130,000 pounds to circumvent weight limits on county roads. At their March 4 meeting, the Carroll County Board of Supervisors expressed concerns that the bill, if signed into law, would negatively affect bridges in the county. The bill did move pass the March 8 funnel, meaning it is still up for debate in this legislative session. Supervisor, Rich Ruggles, sought input from the legislators at Friday’s Carroll Chamber of Commerce Legislative Forum. He says the bill could be detrimental for infrastructure in Carroll County.

Ruggles notes the bill primarily deals with lumber shipments, but it does contain language for enclosed cargo containers. Best has already stated his opposition to the bill and confirmed he would be a no vote unless significant changes are made.

Segebart indicated he would also oppose Senate File 184. He says once you allow one group to have an exception, everybody else will want one too.

With bill passing the first funnel, it moves to the Senate floor for further consideration. April 5 is the deadline for Senate bills to be reported out of House committees and would be up for debate there as early as April 8. A link to the bill’s language can be found included with this story on our website.
