Lake City Man Charged With Interference With Official Acts For Locking Himself In Vehicle During Traffic Stop

A Lake City man faces charges after refusing to cooperate with law enforcement during a traffic stop. According to Carroll County District Court records, 24-year-old Jeremy Scott Scheffers was stopped for a traffic violation on Velvet Avenue near Lanesboro at approximately 7:52 p.m. on Sunday by a deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. Scheffers quickly changed seats with a passenger in an attempt to hide the fact he was barred from driving in Iowa. When law enforcement approached the vehicle, Scheffers locked the doors and ignored multiple requests to step outside. Authorities say he eventually unlocked the doors and resisted arrest as he was being taken into custody. He was transported to the Carroll County jail and charged with driving while barred, an aggravated misdemeanor, interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor, no insurance and no registration. Scheffers was released on his own recognizance after appearing before a magistrate. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 27 at the Carroll County Courthouse. The Lake City Police Department assisted during the incident.
