Lake City has been awarded $20,000 to provide new equipment for first responders and help pay for new playgrounds in town. Two grants were awarded to the Lake City Fire Department, the first coming from the Calhoun County Foundation for $5,000 to purchase updated personal protective equipment for their firefighters. The department also received $10,000 from the Greene County Foundation to purchase a new, battery-powered Jaws of Life, which is primarily used to extract victims trapped inside of a vehicle after an accident. The city was also awarded $5,000 from the Calhoun County Foundation to pay for a portion of the $30,000 in playground equipment purchased to replace the aging structures in Lincoln and Goins Parks. Officials will formally accept the grants during an awards ceremony on Thursday evening at the Rockwell City Community Center.
