Born on November 13, 1936 in Carroll, IA, he was the son of Jess “J.E.” and Eva (Strombeck) Wilson. Jerry spent his childhood in Lanesboro and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1954. He then graduated from Buena Vista University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. On August 28, 1955 he was married to Doris Berns at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Glidden, IA, by Pastor Gundel. Their first years of marriage were spent in Storm Lake until Jerry graduated from Buena Vista. Doris and Jerry returned to Carroll in 1959 where he worked for the Iowa State Employment Service. He later attained his multiline insurance license. In 1973, Jerry and Doris established Wilson Real Estate and operated in Carroll and surrounding counties. After many successful years of selling and listing properties, Jerry and Doris decided to slow down and they joined Patrick O’Leary, a former salesperson of Wilson Real Estate, and his wife Jodi, at Smart Moves Realty. This gave them the freedom to spend winters at their home in Mesa, AZ. The Wilson’s have been active members of the Carroll Community for many years. In early years, Jerry was active with the Carroll Jaycee’s and received the SPOKE award and the Outstanding Young Religious Leader in 1970. He was also listed in the 1970 edition of Outstanding Young Men in America. Jerry served on the Boards of the Community of Concern and the Carroll County Historical Society for many years. In 2007, Jerry received the Governors Volunteerism Award from the State of Iowa. He was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll where he served on many boards. Jerry enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, traveling, socializing with friends, but most of all spending time with his family.
Jerry is survived by his wife Doris of 63 years of Carroll; two daughters: Lori Deegan (Bill) of Kansas City, MO, and Teri Schenkelberg (Mark) of Prairie Village, KS; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Jo Ann Richardson (Ron) of Carroll; and many nieces and nephews.
