Jefferson Man Arrested Following Friday Night Standoff With Authorities

A Jefferson man is in custody after a one-hour standoff with authorities from Jefferson and Greene and Boone Counties. The incident began at approximately 7:35 p.m. when a call came in from a woman who says her husband was sending her text messages and threatening his life. Another notice was received by the Jefferson Police Department at about 8:25 p.m., which advised the woman was now being chased in her vehicle by her husband. The officer made contact with the two vehicles and ordered 42-year-old Branden Gerrick Smith to exit his vehicle, but he instead fled. The officer pursued him for a short distance to a residence in the 300 block of East Lincoln Way Street, but Smith ignored the lights and sirens the entire way. He also ignored the command to stop and show his hands, instead running into the residence. The Greene and Boone County Sheriff’s Offices assisted with the standoff, which ended at approximately 9:40 p.m. when officials entered the residence and took Smith into custody without further incident. Smith was transported to the Greene County Medical Center and medically cleared before being booked into the Greene County jail. Smith is charged with domestic abuse assault, third or subsequent offense, and possession of a firearm by a felon, class D felonies, eluding officers, a serious misdemeanor, and interference with official acts and reckless driving, simple misdemeanors.
