It’s Time To Talk Snow With Carroll Sidewalk Snow Ordinance Changes And School Cancellation Policies

Carroll Police Chief, Brad Burke, has been working on changes to the city’s snow ordinance, hoping to have them approved by the council prior to any snow events. Unfortunately, the first snow storm occurred before it could be presented. The first reading was brought forward this week and Burke says the minor changes are about clearing of sidewalks.

Notices will be personally delivered, and if the offender is not at home or at their business, the notice will be attached to the front door. Burke says they usually deal with repeat offenders.

A clear sidewalk is not only a safety issue for those walking during the winter months, but the homeowner could be held liable if any injuries arise from negligence in snow removal. Burke says in the event a contractor is brought in to do the clearing, the costs will be assessed to the homeowner.

If residents are in need of help with snow removal, they are happy to give them names of contractors willing to do the work. There are no changes to policy at the Carroll Community Schools for snow events, but the administration tries to get a decision on cancellations made early. Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says he and Transportation Director, Jeff Cullen get up very early, drive the district roads and try to have a decision for Carroll Community and Kuemper Catholic Schools made before 6 a.m. However, timing of weather patterns can impact that. When it comes to making up that lost time, the calculation for students differs from that of the instructors.

Berlau says there are typically about four to five days built into the school calendar for these instances. All weather-related announcements will be made on your Carroll Broadcasting stations as soon as they are received.
