Iowa DPS Warns Of Scam In Which Callers Falsely Identify Themselves As DCI Agents

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is warning of a phone scam involving callers misrepresenting themselves as DCI employees. State officials have received numerous reports from citizens claiming scammers attempted to extort money related to the individual’s access to a website. The calls often appear legitimate as the information on caller ID shows as the DCI phone number, the scammers will use false agent names and badge numbers and claim to be working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, they will never request payment over the phone. They encourage anyone who receives a call like this to hang up immediately and contact the Iowa Attorney General’s Office Hotline at 515-281-5926 and local law enforcement. DPS reminds Iowans anytime somebody requests payment using a prepaid debit or gift card that it is almost always a scam. Never provide personal or financial information to incoming callers, especially if you were not expecting a call and do not know the individual.
