Iowa DNR Provides Water Tips For Busy Labor Day Weekend

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is predicting heavy boat traffic on Iowa’s waterways this Labor Day weekend. Boating Law Administrator and Education Coordinator for the DNR, Susan Stocker, says all operators need to exercise caution, watch for hazards in the water and practice proper boating etiquette. Boat ramps are likely to be backed up according to Stocker. “Everyone is excited to get on the water,” she says. “Be patient, and when it’s your turn, be ready to launch. Courtesy on the water goes a long way in avoiding problems.” Stocker also recommends avoiding alcohol while operating a craft. “We want boaters to have fun on the water, but we don’t want that fun to end in a boating tragedy,” she says. “Boaters need to keep safety in mind while on the water.” But preparing for that begins in the driveway by ensuring there is a life jacket of the appropriate size for everyone on board, that safety equipment is working properly and there is a fire extinguisher on the boat. Other tips offered by the DNR include making sure you check the trailer lights, wheel bearings and hitch before pulling out of the drive and to file a float plan with a friend so others know your destination and estimated time of return.
