IDPH Cautions Against Teen Vaping Following Reports Of Severe Respiratory Illnesses In Illinois And Wisconsin

Following a flurry of severe respiratory illnesses linked to vaping among teenagers in Wisconsin and Illinois, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging healthcare providers and residents to be aware of the potential health hazards vaping may cause. As of last week, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services has received 11 reported cases with an additional seven under investigation. The Illinois Department of Public Health has reported three cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the IDPH, affected patients experienced shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, coughing and weight loss leading up to their hospitalization. Health officials note any potential link between these respiratory illnesses and vaping is still being investigated. No cases have yet been reported in Iowa, however, the department is encouraging patients who experience these symptoms to seek medical attention. They also suggest healthcare providers ask about vaping habits in the weeks and months leading up to the onset of symptoms.
