House Representative Best Provides Insight Into 2019 Legislative Outcomes Prior To Saturday’s Final Carroll Chamber Forum

The final Carroll Chamber Legislative Forum was originally scheduled for last weekend, but an extension into Saturday to finish out this year’s general assembly necessitated a rescheduling. The wrap-up with Senator Mark Segebart and House Representative Brian Best will be held Saturday, May 4 at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Best said he is happy to discuss the final days and highlight some of the important legislation passed on to the governor’s desk. He cited Future Ready Iowa as one he is most proud of having seen to fruition.

He was also happy that community colleges will be receiving an additional $6 million in funding, aiding in meeting the needs that will arise with Future Ready Iowa. Best was disappointed in the outcome of two pharmacy benefit manager bills in which he was heavily involved. One didn’t make it through this year and the other got “watered down.”

Best said he looks for the governor to sign into law the hemp production bill, allowing Iowa producers to grow the plant for use in making rope, clothing and other materials. It may, however, take a while for the industry to get up and on its own legs. There is also a key element that he says people need to understand.

Probably one of the most controversial bills to come out at the end of the general assembly was one that would require Iowa’s Attorney General, Tom Miller, to get permission from the governor or the legislature before entering out-of-state lawsuits. Best said he was surprised to see this come up, but he did cast a favorable vote.

Anyone with questions for either legislator is encouraged to attend Saturday’s forum that begins at 10 a.m. at DMACC.
