Hog Roast Ignites Garage In Storm Lake, Causes $20,000+ In Damage

A Storm Lake residence was severely damaged after a hog roast inside a garage ignited the structure. The Storm Lake Fire Department was dispatched to the 300 block of West 7th Street at approximately 1:55 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Upon arrival, firefighters found the garage to be fully engulfed in flames and the fire was beginning to spread to the east wall of the residence. Once crews had determined the house and garage had been evacuated, they began working to extinguish the blaze, starting at the garage. Firefighters then entered the attic, where they located a fire burning in a wall and removed smoldering insulation in the attic and basement ceiling. The cause of the fire was determined to be a grease fire in a large BBQ grill, which was being used to cook an entire hog inside the garage. No injuries were reported. However, damage to the residence is estimated at over $11,000. A nearby car and neighboring home were also damaged. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately two hours and were assisted by the Storm Lake Police Department during the incident.
