Grant Money And In-Kind Labor Will Bring Two New Paved Crossings To Sauk Rail Trail

Director of Carroll County Conservation, Jason Christensen, and County Engineer, Dave Paulson, tag-teamed a discussion on trail crossings this morning (Tuesday) at the supervisor’s meeting. Christensen says that after the successful paving of one of the crossings on the Sauk Rail Trail, they had gone after some grant dollars to help offset the costs of upgrading a couple more of them just south of Breda.

Christensen says they are also able to keep costs down by utilizing the labor of other county employees. Adjacent counties, he adds, are paying much more to have a contractor complete the work.

With the current plan, the county would be able to get two crossings with the $19,000 in grants covering the material costs. Paulson adds that having the secondary roads department working in tandem with the conservation team was an enjoyable experience.

Christensen says they have received a lot of positive feedback on the paving project that has already been completed and the riders and county employees feel it has enhanced the trail’s safety. Paulson says that since the concrete is poured at the same thickness as a roadway, the crossing has held up really well to date. Work on the next two would be expected to take about the same amount of time as the last, which closed the road for about three days.
