Glidden City Council Moves Forward With Updated Sump Pump Discharge Ordinance For Property Owners

The Glidden City Council is moving forward with a new ordinance that will affect how some residents discharge their sump pumps within city limits. Last winter, officials noted there was an unusually large amount of ice buildup in the community’s streets, which damaged the roadways and posed a safety hazard. The council first introduced a remedy in March which barred residents from releasing water into streets during cold weather periods, but that ordinance was tabled before a final reading could be approved. City Clerk, Suzy Danner, says the council began reexamining sump pump regulations near the end of July and approved the second reading of an updated ordinance at their meeting on Aug. 26.

She adds this would not apply to sump pumps in operation during rain events, but rather, instances where a unit is discharging nonstop with no discernible cause. Danner says it is not a pervasive issue, but there are a few homeowners who will be affected.

The third and final reading is scheduled for the Monday, Sept. 9 meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at city hall. If approved, the ordinance would be made official later that week once published.
