Fort Dodge Man Charged With Public Intox After Abandoning Vehicle Near Hwy 71 In Carroll

A Fort Dodge man has been arrested after attempting to avoid Carroll authorities early this (Wednesday) morning. According to a criminal complaint from the Carroll Police Department, an officer observed a vehicle traveling northbound about 10 mph over the speed limit on Highway 71 at approximately 1:03 a.m. After turning his patrol car around to initiate a traffic stop, the officer was no longer able to see the suspect vehicle. It was found abandoned in a nearby parking lot, and additional officers and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit were called in to assist in locating the occupants. An individual, identified as 31-year-old Nicholas Jay Ertl, was spotted a few minutes later, running through a neighborhood near the Carrollton Inn. Authorities say Ertl appeared to be intoxicated and his clothing was wet, torn and muddy. He told law enforcement he was simply a passenger in the vehicle. However, his wallet and ID card were found in the driver’s seat. Ertl was taken into custody and transported to the Carroll County jail, where he was charged with public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor. He was released after posting a $300 cash bond and is scheduled to appear for a court hearing on June 20 at the Carroll County Courthouse.
