Flags To Be Flown At Half-Staff In Honor Of Iowa Sailor Killed At Pearl Harbor

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags across the state to be flown at half-staff from sunrise this (Tuesday) morning until sunset in honor of a fallen U.S. sailor. Navy Signalman 3rd Class, William J. Shanahan, Jr. of Cedar Rapids was killed in action on Dec. 7, 1941, when the USS Oklahoma was attacked by Japanese aircraft at Pearl Harbor. Shanahan’s remains were identified in May of this year and are being returned for burial with full military honors in Cedar Rapids. Flags will be at half-staff at the State Capitol Building, on flag displays in the Capitol Complex and on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
