Evansdale Woman Accused Of Check Forgery In District Court Sentenced To Probation

An Evansdale woman accused of forging checks was sentenced to probation Tuesday in District Court for Carroll County. According to court records, 27-year-old Miranda Marie DeWitt pled guilty to two counts of forgery of a writing, an aggravated misdemeanor. She was originally charged with two counts of forgery, a class D felony, but the charge was reduced in exchange for her guilty plea. In lieu of two, two-year prison sentences, DeWitt was ordered to complete two years of probation under the supervision of the Iowa Department of Correctional Services. More than $1,600 in fines and surcharges were also suspended. However, she will be required to pay approximately $1,500 in restitution, court costs and attorney fees. The charges stem from incidents on March 19 and 20 at Al’s Corner near Breda. DeWitt wrote two checks totaling $267 at the convenience store without the account holder’s knowledge.
