ESC School Board Rescinds Motion That Would Close Sac City Middle School In 2020

The East Sac County Community School District (ESC) Board of Education has rescinded a motion that would close down one of the district’s facilities. At a meeting Monday night, a stakeholder approached the board and expressed concerns that the action taken, which would shutter the middle school in Sac City at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, did not match the published agenda. Superintendent, Barb Kruthoff, says they had been discussing building issues for nearly a year under the same agenda item, and did not change the wording of it prior to the meeting.

School board meetings fall under Iowa’s open meeting laws, and Kruthoff says the individual making the complaint has a valid point.

The board acknowledged their oversight, and board member, Jay Stoltenberg, made a motion to rescind the motion to close the Sac City Middle School. The motion received a second from Ben Wellington and passed unanimously on a roll call vote. As it stands right now, the middle school will no longer close its doors in 2020. However, Kruthoff says the board is still investigating the feasibility of shutting down one of its schools.

Kruthoff adds that making the decision to close a school is never easy, but it is important to remember the board’s goal is to provide a good environment for students to learn.

She indicated the board will be holding a work session on buildings before their next meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at the East Sac County High School in Lake View.
