DNR Investigates Fertilizer Spill After Accident Near Shelby

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a fertilizer spill following a truck accident Wednesday near Shelby. Specialists responded to the scene about one mile east of the Shelby exit on Interstate 80 that afternoon. They report the spill occurred when a Fauth Trucking Company tanker/trailer, carrying about 5,500 gallons of Ultramate liquid fertilizer, approached stopped traffic on the interstate and lost control, overturning. This caused an unknown amount of the fertilizer to leak into a tributary of Silver Creek. There was no sign of a fish kill in the stream on Wednesday, but water samples were collected for testing and DNR staff will continue to monitor the situation and consider appropriate enforcement.
