A Denison man was killed in a collision on a county road west of Schleswig Thursday night. The Iowa State Patrol was notified of the two-vehicle accident on Crawford County Road E-16 and 170th Street at approximately 11:18 p.m. A 2013 Ford Flex, driven by 48-year-old Karry Schurke, was eastbound on E-16 when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the centerline and into the path of a 2018 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer, driven by 33-year-old Leonel Pena of Sioux City. Pena took evasive action by braking and steering to the left and Schurke was attempting to reenter his lane, but the two collided in an off-set head-on manner. Schurke was pronounced dead at the scene and Pena was transported to Crawford County Memorial Hospital by Schleswig Emergency Medical Services. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement assisted at the scene.
