DEA Officials Warn Of Increase In Reported Number Of Scam Calls To Practitioners, Pharmacies And General Public

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is warning the public, especially physicians and pharmacies, of a reported increase in the number of calls from scammers posing as DEA or other law enforcement agencies. Like most scams, these callers threaten legal action against potential victims unless a large fine is paid immediately over the phone. Federal law prohibits individuals from impersonating federal agents, and these criminals will generally identify themselves as DEA personnel or well-known agency officials to demand payment by wire transfer or gift cards. The scams often appear legitimate, as the information that shows up on caller ID may match genuine DEA numbers. The DEA stresses they will never contact individuals or businesses to demand payment or request personal or sensitive information by phone. Notification of legitimate investigations or legal actions are made in person or via official letter. Anyone who receives a scam call of this nature should refuse any form of payment and is asked to contact the DEA directly through the information included with this story on our website.
