DCI Releases Details About Officer-Involved Shooting In Stuart Last Thursday

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Major Crimes Unit has released details about an officer-involved shooting incident in Stuart on Oct. 17. Guthrie County Deputies, Kent Gries, Steven Henry and Jim Mink along with Stuart Police Officer, Tyler DeFrancisco, were attempting to serve outstanding felony arrest warrants on 52-year-old Randall Comly in the 600 block of SW 7th Street at approximately 10:40 p.m. As the officers approached and knocked on the apartment door, they were met by an unidentified adult male. As they entered and began a search for Comly, shots were fired at law enforcement. They returned fire, and in the exchange two deputies sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds and the third deputy a gunpowder burn. Comly also suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound. More than 50 police officers, deputies and troopers responded to the report of shots fired. They were able to secure the area, evacuate neighbors and the two adult females who were in the apartment at that time, negotiate a peaceful ending to the incident and take Mr. Comly into custody. All injured parties were transported to Des Moines hospitals. Comly remains in custody at the hospital. No criminal charges have yet been filed. The DCI is continuing to investigate the shooting. Once completed, they will provide the Adair County Attorney’s Office with all reports, evidence and body camera video that has been collected.
