DCI Brought In To Assist With Investigation Into Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting In Southern Webster County

The Iowa Department of Public Safety has released the names of the parties in a fatal officer-involved shooting in southern Webster County on Monday, Dec. 31. The incident started at approximately 10 p.m. that night in Fort Dodge with the report of a domestic disturbance and escalated into a pursuit when the suspect fled from a Webster County Sheriff’s Office Deputy. Several other law enforcement agencies assisted and were in pursuit when there were shots fired at them from the fleeing vehicle. The officers returned fire, at which time the car entered a field and stopped. Forty-five-year-old Matthew Hurley of Wall Lake was found dead inside the vehicle. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has identified the officers involved as Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Aaron Schmidt and Calhoun County Deputy Chase Goodman. The incident remains under investigation pending autopsy, toxicology and laboratory testing. Carroll Broadcasting will bring you more details as they become available.
