The Coon Rapids Development Group has brought back a program introduced last summer meant to encourage children to practice safe habits when riding through town on their bikes, scooters or other means of travel. City of Coon Rapids employees, including police officers, street department crews and utilities workers, will be watching for kids who are exhibiting an awareness of their surroundings and safe riding behaviors while on the road. As a reward, they will be presented a Bike Safety Award, which can then be turned in at the Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays for free ice cream. They will be watching for children that practice safe behaviors, such as: wearing a helmet, following traffic laws, looking both ways before crossing a road and much more. The Coon Rapids Development Group put an emphasis on bike safety with the introduction of the Bike Safety Awards and annual Bike Rodeo in 2018 and will continue the program throughout the summer.
