Three conservation-focused organizations are teaming up this weekend to offer a free, birding experience for people of all ages and experience levels. On Saturday, April 6, Matt Wetrich, a naturalist at Swan Lake State Park, Whiterock Conservancy and the Big Blue Stem Audubon Society of Ames will be exploring Dunbar Slough near Scranton. According to Wetrich, early April is one of the best times of the year to encounter a wide variety of different species.
He adds it took a lot of organization to get this outing organized. The Ames Audubon Society hosts a monthly field trip, and Wetrich was approached by the group to lead their April event. After Dunbar Slough was suggested as a destination, he approached Whiterock Conservancy, which owns land in the area, to allow them access to a potentially wider range of encounters. Wetrich says everyone from experts to first-time birders are welcome to join in Saturday’s adventure.
Wetrich stresses no prior experience is needed to attend. Interested individuals will gather at the Casey’s General Store in Scranton at 8 a.m. before heading out onto the excursion.
