Officials from the City of Glidden were presented a $10,000 check on Tuesday afternoon from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), which will be used to connect public areas on the north and south sides of Highway 30. According to AARP, nearly 1,700 applications were received for the 2019 Community Challenge grant program, and Glidden was one of only 159 projects selected to receive funding. Mayor, Roger Hartwigsen, says city officials and residents are excited to have been one of the few communities chosen.

This grant will help fund improvements to existing sidewalks and the construction of new pathways near the intersection of Highway 30 and Idaho Street. According to Hartwigsen, this is just a small part of many smaller projects planned throughout town. Approximately $2.1 million dollars in improvements to various aspects of the community have been completed or are in the process of being funded.

He added it all fits into Glidden’s long-term plan, which was created by two joint community visioning committees. AARP Iowa Communications Director, Julie Betts, and State Director for Advocacy, Anthony Carroll, presented the check at Tuesday’s presentation. Betts said AARP is proud to support project like this in vibrant communities, particularly ones found in rural areas of Iowa.

Three other Iowa projects were selected for the 2019 grant cycle, including: a series of education workshops from the Iowa League of Cities, a community plaza and amphitheater in Dyersville and story walk trail in Harlan. Work on Glidden’s crossing project is expected to begin soon and be completed by the end of October.
