Carroll Woman Accused Of Taking Wall Lake Man’s Vehicle Ordered To Serve Time In Carroll County Jail

A Carroll woman accused of taking a Wall Lake man’s vehicle has been ordered to serve time in the Carroll County jail. According to district court records, 32-year-old Sonya May Smires entered a guilty plea to one count of operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent, an aggravated misdemeanor, after reaching an agreement with prosecutors. The charge stems from an incident on Jan. 5, in which the victim reported Smires had taken a 2005 Grand Prix without the owner’s knowledge and did not communicate with them about the car’s whereabouts when contacted. She was sentenced to 90 days in the county jail, with all but two days suspended. Over $800 in fines and surcharges, were also suspended. Smires will be placed on unsupervised probation for one year to the Carroll County Probation office and must pay restitution in an amount to be determined at a later time.
