Carroll School Board Selects Shared Superintendent At Nodaway Valley And CAM, Dr. Casey Berlau, To Take The Helm At CCSD

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education has selected Dr. Casey Berlau, the shared superintendent at the CAM and Nodaway Valley Districts to be the school’s next lead administrator. The board made their decision Thursday after meeting in closed session for nearly 10 hours. In a statement released today (Friday), the board indicates Dr. Berlau has verbally accepted an offer and was chosen based on his instructional leadership and professional, humble and poised leadership style. Berlau is excited to become a Tiger and says educators spend their whole careers hoping to work in a place like Carroll.

He holds a doctorate in Education Leadership from Drake University with a master’s in secondary education. Berlau comes to the district with more than a decade of superintendent experience under his belt. Prior to his 10 years at Nodaway Valley and CAM, he served as the superintendent and principal at Elk Horn-Kimballton and as a classroom teacher in Seymour. He effectively oversaw the construction of a new elementary building in Greenfield while improving the financial standing of the districts he has led. The accomplishment he is most proud of, however, is his ongoing effort to improve instructional quality.

According to Berlau, Carroll is consistently one of the top districts in the state for a reason, and he does not intend to come into the district with major overhauls. He points out many schools are facing similar problems, and his efforts will be devoted to finding solutions tailored to the community.

The district has been without a permanent superintendent since the resignation of Miller’s predecessor, Dr. Kevin Lein, in early February. Berlau, says he and his wife, Jodi, look forward to becoming a part of the Carroll community. They have three children: their oldest, Madi, is a senior in high school; an eighth-grader, Bryce; and Maci, a fourth-grader. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, hunting and being outdoors. He officially starts as superintendent at the beginning of the fiscal year on July 1.
