Carroll County Residents Encouraged To Participate In 2019 Christmas Bird Count Thursday

For more than 100 years, the National Audubon Society has kept track of bird population around the holiday season, and the 2019 Carroll County Christmas bird count is scheduled for later this week. Naturalist, Matt Wetrich, says the data is collected on an annual basis and serves as a valuable resource for scientists around the country.

This year’s count is Thursday, Dec. 19 and occurs throughout the day. Anybody can become a citizen scientist and help with the data collection. Wetrich says you can even participate from the comfort of your own home if you live in the right place.

The count circle expands 15 miles from a point just southeast of Lidderdale and includes Carroll and Glidden. For individuals wanting to be more involved, Wetrich says they will be searching for birds throughout the county Thursday.

Participants are asked to track the number of each species they see and the amount of time they spend collecting data. For more information, contact Wetrich at the Swan Lake Conservation Center by phone at 712-792-4614 or by sending an email to matt@carrollcountyiowa.org. Once the count has concluded, results can be turned in using those contact points.
