Carroll City Council Gets First Tax Abatement Application And Will Talk About First 5K Block Party At Tuesday’s Meeting

With Monday being the Memorial Day Holiday, the Carroll City Council meeting will be moved to Tuesday, May 28. One of the first orders of business included in the consent agenda is the approval of the first tax abatement application. City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, says it was submitted by Court Street LLC, who is doing business as the Lincoln Highway Suites. Principal members, Adam Schweers, Chad Kanne and Matt Wendl, approached the city council about the possibility of receiving these abatements in September of 2018. After researching the request, an urban revitalization district was created by the council. Within this district, single or multi-family residences would be eligible for a five-year, 100 percent abatement on the first $75,000 in increased assessed value.

Court Street LLC is rehabbing the former Morrison Apartments on Highway 30, east of Walgreens, at an estimated total cost of $740,000 with an expected completion date in March of next year. The building will house 20 units, with the $75,000 in abatements applying to each, if they are eligible. An upcoming event for the benefit of Carroll County Relay for Life, the first annual 5K Block Party hosted by Kerp’s Tavern, Carroll Brewing Company and Anytime Fitness is also on the agenda. They are requesting to close the street and to sell alcohol outside in that enclosed area. Pogge-Weaver says this is a great idea and the timing is right to showcase that area.

Following the regular meeting, the council will participate in a workshop on a topic brought up at a recent council meeting by a concerned resident.

He adds this is really the first step in getting the information out to the public and beginning the feedback process. The meeting will convene at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday in the Adams Elementary School board room. The public is encouraged to attend and a link to the full packet of information can be found below.
