Carroll High School (CHS) Business Teacher, Chelsea Bissen, has been named the 2019 Carroll Broadcasting Innovative Teacher of the Year. Bissen joined the staff at CHS in 2012 and is the driving force behind the district’s student-run advertising agency, Tiger Vision. Bissen, with the support of administration, has built the marketing class into one of the most unique in the state. She says the class is continuing to grow in size and scope.

Bissen runs Tiger Vision like a business, assigning students job titles and duties. Her goal is to prepare every student in her classes for the modern workplace, from web design and merchandising to live broadcasts and social media. Bissen says it would not be possible without the incredible support she has from the school board and administration.

Bissen takes great pride in her students’ accomplishments. In one of the many nominations, a parent of a current student shared the story of her son earning a spot with the video department at the University of Iowa, thanks to his work with Tiger Vision. After hearing the news, the first person he wanted to contact was his teacher, who was just as excited as his parents were. Bissen says this is the type of outcome most teachers hope for, and her efforts are starting to get noticed.

Bissen was presented the award during a surprise assembly Friday afternoon in the high school gymnasium. Video from the presentation can be found included with this story on our website. Bissen joins Lance Wilhelm from East Sac County, Winnie Geelan-Potthoff from Kuemper and Payton Ball from Glidden-Ralston as the 2019 Carroll Broadcasting Teachers of the Year.
