Book Fair Funds Allegedly Diverted To Former Storm Lake St. Mary’s School Employee

A former Storm Lake St. Mary’s Catholic School librarian and art teacher has been arrested for allegedly diverting proceeds from fundraisers for her own personal use. The Storm Lake Police Department reports they were notified of the missing money on June 6 and an investigation was initiated. Authorities interviewed various school administrators and finance personnel who pointed to the Scholastic Book Fairs, held once each in the spring and fall. Money raised from the books and educational merchandise to be used for the school system’s curriculum supplies seemed to have been coming up short. Fifty-year-old Susan Slagle-Boyd of Storm Lake had facilitated the book fairs. The investigation alleges that Slagle-Boyd had diverted about $630 from the cash proceeds in the fall and another $1,500 in the spring. Slagle-Boyd was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with second-degree theft, misappropriation of property, a class D felony. She was booked into the Buena Vista County jail on a $5,000 bond.
